Digital Photography Masterclass

By a long way the most ambitious, complicated book projected I’ve ever undertaken. And it wasn’t as if I had years to put it together, either. At one time I counted ten different people working simultaneously on the title, doing everything from subbing captions to pre-flighting files for Americanization.

I shall always remember having the entire Dorling Kindersley office to myself – I think it was the last weekend before Christmas – drilling down through folders and folders on their server to check and write the last few pages. The book involved amateur contributions from all over the world as well as professionals ‘interviewed’ by email from Kashmir to Tokyo, Australia to England.

The mix of photography – that is, not all mine – is what gives the book a great width and depth of coverage and variety. Furthermore, the book’s design has been praised even by members of the public – a rare compliment to Sarah Arnold’s brilliant, if exceedingly complicated, grid and layout rules. But it was above all a triumph for team-work, led by stalwart project editor Nicky Munro who has steered most of my DK books – and always with expert aplomb.

Best of all, it’s been an amazingly strong performer. Although written for the experienced user (‘Masterclass, geddit?) it’s been enthusiastically taken up by beginners. Well, that proves amply that we have no idea what we’re doing. But we must be getting something right: in its year of publication it won “The Crème De La Crème” of the Top Digital Imaging Books of 2008, from Shutterbug Magazine; and Best How-to Book of 2008, of the Library Journal. And people have formed groups on picture-sharing sites to review each other’s completed assignments. Way to go! You’re harder working than I am!
